Hi Ed, That's the question and answer. "Necessary" not for us to
enjoy S scale but for S scale to become an equal to HO scale. There's
no structural reason for the current minority position of S scale,
it's just the lack of availability of beginner priced equipment(or a
wide range of equipment at any price) The newbies walk into a shop and
see shelves full of HO, N, and O scales but no S scale so what should
we expect them to do? The sad part is S scale would be the best size
for many HO and O scalers but they never get the chance to find this
out. The current state of affairs makes it hard for even an
experienced modeler to switch to S scale, the other scales just offer
so much more equipment and better value that it is hard to ignore
them. It's not the way it should be but it is the way it is.
I consider S my primary scale now and I push it to anyone who will
listen and to all groups I belong to but I've actually got much more O
scale equipment and might end up building my next layout in P48 not
from preference but for ease. I've even got more N scale rolling
stock than S stock and I've only been collecting it for a few months
versus about 4 years of S scale. I've been modeling for 50 years so if
S is this hard for me to work with think how hard it must seem to a
new modeler?....dave
