Not sure if this is what you're looking for but years ago I did a 3D
sign on an HO building using lettering from press-in announcement
boards. I think I trimmed off the backtabs and cemented them to a
Plastruct frame.

I was looking for the 'effect' and I wasn't looking at the scaleness
of the lettering.

I did a quick search at Staples and found 1" and 1/2" high lettering
sets. Here's the link to try. You may have to cut and paste in
pieces:
http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?&langId=-1&storeId=10001&splCatType=0&catalogId=10051&productId=151978&cmArea=SC1:CG101:DP2084:CL142399

(The storeID is for the Detroit area.)

Of course you'd have to buy a whole set of them, but think of how many
buildings you can do..... : )
