Dave & All,

I figured that someone would bring up the wheelbase this shortly after my
post. To be honest, I don’t know what the correct wheelbase is for a Shark
or for an RS3.

About 9 years ago I was all fired up about retrofitting the Southwind (Now
BTS) Alco sideframes to replace the old nasty original Alco sideframes. THE
SWM/BTS castings are MUCH nicer. This was shortly after I got my Unimat so I
was a machining fool with this fit up job. I got new NWSL motors with
flywheels (Pre DCC) I also didn’t know about the disintegrating truck
castings. All was well until I snapped off a gear tower. I remember that at
that time I probably could not fix the broken part. My heart sank right then
and there. I have not touched them since...

Flash forward to 2007... I saw the parts listing from RRM including new
power trucks from the Sharks. Since I was already working on my Baldwin AS16
using a bashed brass GP 30 drive and the ALCO sideframes, I figured I could
easily go the other way....

In short, I will GLADLY accept a wheelbase discrepancy in trade for a RTR
ALCO LOOKING power truck that will last forever, and give me the creepy
crawly running ability that I KNEW would come from our RRM Twins.... I have
lots of time wasted fluffing the old stuff that I will now off at some
point... But I will probably still use the NWSL motors from back then.

I have 3 RS3, 1 Loco Workshop RS1 and an RSD 4/5 that will get the similar
treatment. I could not see trying to retro an AM drive into a brass shell,
although it probably could be done. That is why the new trucks made perfect
sense. I may have bought the rest RRM had. This was at the convention in
Baltimore. The RSD will get bashed Overland E unit trucks. I am loosing the
ALCO drives altogether.

There is a shot of 3 RS3 slugging up Slope past Alto Tower with a LONG
string of empty hoppers in a nice snow cover. I WANT that photo in S Scale!
I will get it too!

Thank You,
Bill Lane
