Trains and Death................What a combo.......Whew
Have you ever noticed in Ebay how you can tell it's a widow listing
the trains? Without saying "from my late husbands collection" or
"Here's the selfish SOB's collection". You just know the poor guy is
dead. Many say " Forty athearn engines" Statring bid 50.00
Or the opposite........Alco Brass SW7 Starting bid 800.00 Buy it now
825.00 (someone told her brass was valueable). The sellers names
are a give away too. Quiltinggranny, Grannyx10, 1richmama......
My story was in 1977 I worked at a hobby shop and the widow came
in a month after her husband escaped. She wanted to sell the stuff. I
said we'd have to see and inventory everything. She reared up.
(Seriously she grew 4 inches in front of us) and bellowed "You know
exactly what he bought! You sold it to him".
Well..........Yes we did but the store had been open just 4 years and
he'd had a layout since 46 when he was first incarcerated with her.
I said (since I'd seen the layout) "I have a pretty good idea what he
had and I'll get back to you" I forgot all about it till their daughter
came in in 81 and said "come and get it". (the warden had died) Its
yours. Dad liked you and I know it will go to a good home. So I had
the honor (or not) of disassembling the layout (threw the plywood
out) and packing everything up. I have never sold any of it. I put
Sagami motors in most of the old brass and finished his project of
KaDee 5s (now with scale Kadee 58s) There's something charming
about running the older cars with good trucks and a bit of
weathering. All in all it pays to wait.

Hi All,

I may have previously mentioned that I am lucky to have Sattler's, a
REAL
train store about 20 minutes form me. It is 99% trains only and has
been
that way for 40+ years. I basically just buy paint form there, but they
have had some SHS in stock.

The current owner bought or inherited it from the deceased
founders. Bruce
is a true character if you have ever met 1, with the driest sense of
humor
ever! With the exception of going to Viet Nam, Sattler's is the only
place
he has ever worked. He is now a very well preserved 63 year old
man that
could easily pass for 50.

Sattler's occasionally buys collections of trains and books. Bruce
has many
sayings like "Business has never been as good as the Christmas of
'52", We
are going down hard across the bow", "I will Donna a penny on the
dollar
for your S Scale and she will still be set" and "makes sure he is cold
before you call". Here is why...

They open at 10:00. Bruce got a call at 10:03 from the wife of a
regular
customer that had some health issues, inquiring if Bruce was
interested in
buying her husband's train collection. Bruce replied that he just saw
her
husband, and he seemed well. When did he die? She replied "at
8:30 this
morning!" The poor man was dead for 1 1/2 hours and was NOT
even cold yet!
All she could think of is offing the trains ASAP! YIKES. Bruce says
this
with a straight face and presents it as a true story.

Can you top that 1 Ron? (:->)

Thank You,
Bill Lane
