Although I'm not near as 'vintage' as my friend Bill, I feel his pain!
My RR as a few pop-ups and to reach a new freight yard one has to crawl
quite a ways. I was faced with the problem of where does one put
passenger trains. Face it most passenger trains are moving and seldom
'sit in town' for very long. Therefore I built a 'underground'
passenger train storage area that can hold four short trains while they
are in theory out on the road. This underground yard requires one to
drop to one knee, but I have carpeting there so it's not bad at all. Of
the four pop-ups three are only ;used to scenery construction or
derailments. The fourth, which is fairly large contains a remote
control panel for operations nights--otherwise it's a scenic area.

Next came the problem I've mentioned in the past--too many freight
cars! I've sold many, keep a few in storage but the majority are worth
keeping and running. So last year, when my wife was out of town, I
added a six track yard terminal (maybe 40-50 cars) in a spare
bedroom/storage room. It only is a 20" shelf about 6' long with access
through the normal doorway via a removable lift out. However to get
there one must go through the house or crawl under the layout. Thus far
it isn't bad and I normally enter the RR room that way anyway.

Hopefully, in the future I will be limber enough to actually have some
fun operating it shortly--just like Frank Titman.
