Excellent idea Dave, I was up close and personal with these flats while
stationed at Camp LeJeune between may of 59 till Sept 61. I was with the
2nd Pioneer bn and we often made cruises to various parts of the globe.
These flats were positioned in a loading zone and all the tracked
vehicles- bull dozers amtracks, tanks, and other stuff that couldn't
drive to Morehead City about 25 miles away - were loaded, we tied them
down and rode the train to the port. These were massive flats and carried
heavy loads. This act was repeated when the ships returned. I don't
know where they are now but I think I have some old photos.

heavy-duty DODX flatcars that are, to a diminished extent, still around.
Appropriate loads are already (?) available, though I have often thought
back to some of the stuff I saw in the 60s, Pershing, Sergeant, Honest
John, etc., that I wish could have on a layout as a reminder of those
days when these units actually represented the state of the art at the
time. DJE
