Stan and John,
For a real handy and relatively inexpensive conversion software package, go
to: www.StansTrains.com
It's well worth the money. There are 16 screens for various conversions
frequently used in model RR applications.

I'm a little fuzzy on grade changes and thought I could get this cleared up.
Would a 4% grade be .04 X 12" track
section be a .48" change over the track section length? It seems like a big
change. Jay

Hi John / Jay--

A quick and dirty approximation is 1/8" elevation change in one foot of run is
1%. 1/4" = 2%, 3/8" = 3%, etc.

There is about a 5% error in this, but it is close enough to use in planning
and operation, and the single foot
index fits easily into our thinking and space. The more direct answer is that
you are correct. And, yes, that is a
relatively steep grade. Bill Winans
