Hi Jim , John D. and others --

Re: RRM steam loco running qualities -- I have a 2-8-4,a 2-10-4, and a
2-6-6-2 that are all virtually SILENT, will start a full length train so
slowly (on a PFM system) that it is hard to tell that they are moving. None
of these required any "tweeking" to make that happen, and they did it right
out of the box. While my RRM 2-6-6-6 is also a great loco and runs very
smoothly, it wasn't built by Boo Rim (the current best maker of brass) and
the style of gearing makes some noise, but that is getting better as it
accrues some run time. My older brass steam (GS4, USRA 4-6-2, USRA 0-8-0,
MP 2-8-0, Erie 4-6-0, NYC 4-6-4) all run really well, but the Ajin built
locos needed new motors to do that. I traded my USRA 2-8-2 to Jim K , and
it ran well after getting a new motor on both versions of the gearbox that
it had (different gear ratios). I have at least 10 PBL Sn3 locos, and ALL
of them set the standard for running qualities in ANY scale and were
unmatched until RRM came along... Scale S running qualities were one of the
BIG reasons a lot of us went to S and Sn3, as opposed to any smaller scale.

Essentially what I am saying, is that if you can do as well as PBL and RRM,
you will be as good as it gets---period.

Have fun!

P.S. Did you notice how often the motor comes up in these discussions?
Unless there is a high quality motor (generally not inexpensive) running the
mechanism, you have no chance. The motors that RRM uses are nearly $100
each.

Re: the running quality and price issues that John Degnan legitimately
brought up, Bob McCarthy and I are VERY aware of such issues. In our minds,
both have equal importance as we're designing these engines. I have never
owned, not even seen, any of River Raisin's fine work so cannot comment on
the running quality; I just read what others say. John and I both come from
HO where brass steam built in the 70s and 80 ran poorly ... if they ran at
all.
