According to the handy-dandy inflation calculators, an item costing  
$85 in 1953 (55 years ago) would cost more than seven times as much  
today.

http://www.westegg.com/inflation/infl.cgi came up with $648.78

Another such calculator came up with $694.00

And the inflation calculator supplied by the Federal Reserve Bank of  
Minneapolis says the equivalent price today would be $686.37.

Proving once again that prices back in the "good old days" weren't so  
great after all.
