On my next layout I'll follow the two-page article "Wheel Reports for Easy Operation" by Jim Hediger, Model Railroader magazine, May 1984. Wheel reports eliminate your concerns about a huge fleet of cars and the related paperwork. In general his procedure calls for keeping track only of the total number of cars to be switched at each station. The cars are not specified by reporting marks, so there are neither waybills nor a car inventory to manage. The only paperwork is a wheel report for each train. You create as many wheel reports in advance as you need for variety. The wheel report shows for each location the type of car to set out. The train also picks up one car of the same type for each car set out. Consequently the number and types of cars in each train remains constant. When the train reaches its destination, its cars go back into the yard for use in other trains. The switching of cars at each location is flexible. It can be simple or complex, depending where you set out cars and which ones you pick up. Also, if you are pressed for time, you can run the train straight through without setting out or picking up any cars at all. -- Bill Roberts, Receiver San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railway Co. * * * Notice to travelers * * * Passengers on the Waco branch can make better time to and from San Antonio by traveling via the Galveston, Harrisburg & San Antonio Railway for the portion of their trip between Flatonia and San Antonio. <http://www.wcroberts.org/Images/1893_SAP_Map.html> ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
