*notes the Penn Central history...*

Eeeeeyup, although I should note that while Penn Central was kind of a
joke, it was actually a brilliant idea that COULD have been wonderful
move for both railroads.  The New Haven...  well, there's only so much
duplicate trackage you can have before redundancy becomes even MORE
redundant.  The New Haven was... interesting, but I think it was more
the foibles and conflicts between the combined New York Central and
Pennsylvania management teams that caused most of the problems.

Personally, I kind of liked Penn Central, but more for a kind of
"train wreck" reason.   Standing derailments are just... wrong, and
yet you can't help but wonder.  TPR did a wonderful article on the
Penn Central about 10 years ago that I kept, mostly for those
"standing derailment" shiny tidbits. :)
