Group,
Yes, B&O wagontop box cars roamed the country in interchange as did most box
cars. One could see them in every part of the country. I meant that the B&O
did not sell the cars to other railroads to be used in revenue service. That a
car showed up as a tool shed or whatever on a "foreign" road does not
necessarily prove that it was purchased by that road from the B&O for revenue
service. It could suggest that the car was wrecked on a given road beyond
reasonable repair or that, as has been intimated if not suggested, that the B&O
sold off a few for whatever practical use they could be put to after the cars
had passed their service life on the road. I would hold to the idea that the
cars were wrecked on a foreign road and found use as a utility shed or
something of the kind. Most roads had enough cars of their own which could
generally be used for storage or whatever without having to purchase them from
the B&O for such a purpose.
Well, someone on the list will probably come up with a photo showing a wagontop
car in revenue service and reporting marks of a road other than B&O. Such a
thing is possible, and perhaps one should never say never. Still, I hold to
the wreckage theory.
