Hi Bill;
Well, final say is obviously up to the owner/moderators of the list. I've never
seen a complaint about someone announcing either a new S product or that they
had some S items to sell, not have there been any serious abuses of the list
that I recall (on going back and forth negotiations carried out on list).
IMHO, the utility of the list would be diminished if we did ban such posts.
It's not like there are so many venues for new product announcements or sales
of extra items. If someone started flogging Amway products on the list, that
would be a different issue.

The prohibition regarding sales is not a group rule. Instead, it is a
Yahoo rule. In Terms of Service, Item 6, Yahoo states:

This is a complex issue, and there are no easy answers. What one
person says is spam, another person welcomes as promoting a product he
wants to buy.
I myself don't mind commercial announcements of products, because S
scalers don't have very many ways of finding out what's available.
However, this list is intended for a discussion of S scale. By
subscribing to it, I don't believe I agreed to receive postings of
used stuff for sale. (That is the purpose of other groups, magazine
classified ads, online auction sites, etc.) The good thing is that
such solicitations haven't gotten to the point of being annoying.
Where do you draw the line?
