I had given a lot of thought to the coupler problem several years ago.
At the moment I have a mix of converted #5's, a few regular #5's, a few
SHS, and a lot of 802 types. They all have there advantages and
disadvantages. There is no doubt that the #5 type box and spring system
is the easiest to use. I generally like the size of the larger SHS&
Kadee's, but the problem seems to be the delayed action doesn't seem to
work as well. The decender on the SHS couplers is not fastened and thus
swings freely making them generally undependable.

I once suggested to one of the manufacturers that a great operating
coupler would be the best selling item in S scale. If somebody were to
make a "GREAT" working and looking coupler, a pair could be sold for
every car! I have perhaps 300 cars that could use them. At about $3
per pair I would think that the investment would pay for itself and keep
paying as folks added new cars to the layout. Kadee has been selling
their basic coupler for many years so it must have made them a fair
profit during that time. We've spent the last many years hoping,
praying, converting and making due--we need change! Boy does this sound
like a political campaign statement!
