Rhett,
Didn't mean to discourage you in any way from using the Kadee #5's,
just wanted to point out one of their discrepancies from full size for
S. Yes, you can take Ed L.'s suggestion and mount them out a little
further from the car end which might give the impression of a Duryea
underframe (those coupler pockets stuck out just a tad as compared to
standard underframes)
I was basing my info solely on their normal mounting with the coupler
pocket lip touching the end of the carbody.
One other thing that I don't think had been mentioned was that of
knuckle "gathering range" or the side to side alignment of the couplers
when coupling up to standing cars, they can be off just a bit from
center spacing and it might make for more than one attempt to couple up.
I believe this issue caused a whole new wheel back to back measurement
to minimize the excess slop caused by the old NMRA code 125 wheels.
Guys, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this lead to the developement
of the current code 110 NASG standards?
Like Pieter, I have cars equipped with the 802's, AM snap loks, and
maybe only one car still equipped with the #5's and they do all couple
up but uncoupling is a whole 'nother ballgame.
I have a few pair of the Sergents and use those between F unit
lashups that I don't want to uncouple prematurely and on the lead unit
of F's that won't ever be "trailing units" for aesthetics ( I like them
with the knuckle open)
