Bill, the info you have received about the Loco Workshop RS-1 is correct. The
drive components were marketed as a powering kit by Jon Beveridge, under the
name "Cascade Hobby Products." You can see a photo of mine on the NASG
website:

http://www.nasg.org/databases/locomotives.php

and select "Locomotive Workshop" and "RS-1" from the "manufacturer" and
"locomotive type" drop-down lists respectively. The Beveridge drive was a
superlative product. Originally it came with an open-frame motor, but later
versions had a Sagami can motor. It is an easy job to replace the older motor
with a can motor. If yours is balky, try disassembling the drive train,
removing all the lubricant, and re-lubing/oiling. If the problem persists,
replace the motor with a Sagami.

Regarding the Beveridge drives: At an NASG Convention some years ago -- I
think it was Syracuse in 1991 -- there was a basket-case Loco Workshop diesel
switcher in the auction. The bids got up to the $50 range, when someone in the
crowd shouted out "what makes that @#$% worth so much?" Several people replied
in unison: "It has a Beveridge drive!"

Alas,Tom, I have seen the Loco Workshop E-7 A and B in person. They were not
pretty. These too were in Larry Sokol's collection. He had paid another
modeler, a very good craftsman, to build them for him. The construction job
was nice, and the units even had sprung scratchbuilt truck sideframes that the
custom builder had fabricated. (The Loco Workshop kits had sideframes, but
they were awful.)

However, the detailing was sparse, and the cabs looked more like Baldwin
"baby-face" cabs (like the DR 4-4-15 and DR 6-4-15). No one would ever have
mistaken these units as E-7s, even though that's what they were supposed to be.

I wound up with the trucks, which are now under a couple of heavy electrics.
