Peter,
The problem is SHS has the same problems as the Kadee #802. Over sized
looking down and springs on the outside for the knuckle. Visually comparing
them, the SHS is even a tad wider looking. Now there should really be no
compromise. Why you ask. If they can make an HO, HOn3, N and Z scale
coupler then an exact width S scale should be possible. A quick measurement
of the SHS and Kadee #802 shows me it is 1.5' across the top, not scale.
The main visual problem for me is the un-prototypical spring on the side of
the coupler to make it work. IIRC McHenry makes an HO coupler without the
spring on the side and it still functions.
Personally I've decided that the all the visual problems aren't that
important. I model the 1970's era and use HO #5 or the version with the
longer shank. The #5 mates with my Sergent and AM scale couplers as well as
the 802's and SHS. The short shank on the SHS isn't what I want either for
about 50% of my coupler needs. Also as an aside, I do not use magnates in
or under the track. I choose to use a pick or the HO un-coupler that is
shaped like an h with magnates that you straddle the couplers with. Even on
the HO layouts I operate on, track magnates are not used.
As to automatic, the prototype has to be opened or uncoupled manually. The
prototype doesn't center itself. If you uncouple on a curve the coupler
stays put. When you go back to make joint or couple up you must make sure
the new coupler lines up to complete the move. Mass here helps but if you
were to center the coupler the knuckle would not close enough to make the
pin fall which is the mechanical means of closing the coupler.
So I'm going to reiterate again. Who wants to front the money for new
tooling? I don't, since I'm ok with the system I chose. I will not e mail
Kadee and bother them since they've already stated they do not contemplate
redesigning their S/On3 coupler. So if you are bothered by the oversized
width of the 802 or SHS coupler there is a solution.
If you like, I can photograph the couplers next to each other for comparison
and post them in the Photos section.
