After many years I finally put into service yesterday 5 Rex gondolas
and 5 Rex flat cars, all box car red. I dug into my decal supply to
letter them for different railroads (C&A, NYC, GM&O, D&H, SLSF, RI,
THB, PE, MP and B&M). Six cars ride on Rex trucks, two on American
Models trucks, and one each on Ace archbar trucks and on Allied Full
Cushion trucks. All the trucks use NWSL wheelsets, except for S Helper
wheelsets in the four American Models trucks. They are all fitted with
KD 808 couplers.
As I watched them running behind a SP Train Master, I must confess
that I forgot the couplers were a little oversize and that the backs
of the wheels were not contoured. I was having too much fun!
I got help from Rusty Rustermier and Lee Johnson. Rusty provided the
brass eyelets that serve as bearings in the Rex and Ace sideframes.
Lee gave me Ace conversion bolsters for two gons that had AF
underframes.
