Historical comment -- or, a bit of S trivia: Years ago a fellow
who I will call Gerry wanted something a little better for S scale.
So he embarked on a project. Quite a while later, he showed up at
our local club meeting with an A-B brake set in plastic. That's all.
No engine, no box car, no coupler -- just a brand new exquisite A-B
brake set better than the others.
At the time, some folks said, "Is that all?" While others said, "Cool!"
Also at the time, Don Thompson said words to the effect that merely by
creating this small product for S scale, Gerry had done more than 99% of
the rest of us guys. A very true statement for sure.
Gerry went on to find a buddy, who I will call John, and formed some kind
of a partnership relationship. While I do not know all the details, these
two guys eventually made a complete boxcar and PACIFIC RAIL SHOPS was born.
And it all started with a lowly A-B brake set and the admiration of us all
at the time. Perhaps a similar approach might work for those who are unhappy
with the available S scale couplers. All it takes is one fellow to do it
and get the ball rolling. Kadee's patents have expired and so the field is
wide open at the moment. Time to get something useful underway instead of
another blizzard of emails which accomplishes little in a tangible sense.
So who is going to step up to the coupler task?
And, what have YOU produced that is tangible (not words) that has made S
scale
a better place than yesterday?
Cheers....Ed L. (another idea for someone else to do)
