Simon,
Actually, the Sergent will couple to an 802. I know. I've done it a
couple of times by mistake. It ain't pretty and uncoupling is a
challenge. I am not sure if I would really reccomend it.
I use Sergent's on my home equipment and change certain pieces to 802's
or SHS when I want them to run on the Canadian S Scale Workshop
Layout.
Luckily, when I started in S, I started with the Sergent. I do like
the Sergent couplers overall however, you really have to learn how to
use them. There is no doubt about the fact that the 802's and SHS are
easier to use. There is a problem if you want to uncouple passenger
cars with diaphrams. You can't get the magnetic wand positionned well
enough over the coupler to do the job. I think that I may have a
solution using a flat fridge magnet glued to a piece of brass strip and
sliding this strip over the coupler underneath the diaphram. I have
not tried this yet. Any other ideas are more than welcome.
As far as switching goes, my tracks are always between 3" to 20" away.
This is not a reach for most people. I think that anything farther
might present a challenge doing the coupling/uncoupling. If you hand
uncouple Kadees/SHS using a manual uncoupler, you still have that
problem.
I'm not looking to convert anyone I am just giving two cents. If
Sergent does not produce the S scale coupler again, I may eventually
have to change.
cheers,
Andy Malette
