if you see a seller tell you to tack on extra 3% Paypal fee tell him its
against Paypal policy and you are reporting him to Paypal unless he removes
that from his listing.  Paypal will not allow him to do it....been there done
it.

The reason many sellers charge very high shipping is to avoid
paying seller fees on the full amount to ebay.  Even if you bid less for the
item, he thinks he's making out.  I think it often backfires.  I usually won't
bid on items like that.

In the past I've bought and sold S scale items on eBay. In general

I've been pleased. However, I've noticed two trends that are

discouraging from the buyer's point of view: [1] a seller adds

exorbitant shipping cost, such as $3 to mail a set of decals and [2] a

seller asks buyers using PayPal to add 3% to their successful bid.

When I sell something I ask the buyer to pay for postage only; I

absorb the cost of the box and pack the item securely so that it

arrives in good shape. Some sellers apparently see this as another way

to make money.

As for PayPal, it facilitates the transaction. It allows me to ship an

item promptly when I might otherwise worry about getting paid. There

is, of course, a cost to the seller in getting his money from PayPal.

At least one seller is asking buyers to pay for this cost.

There may be other trends, besides these two, that make eBay less

appealing. As an occasional seller I don't mind paying eBay and PayPal

fees for the ability to turn my surplus S scale items into cash. As an

occasional buyer, when I see exorbitant shipping and extra costs for

using PayPal, all I can do is decline to bid.
