And, a three point check gage, when used INcorrectly, narrows the track
gauge when used on a curve. This might be a problem with long
wheelbased steamers and cause binding -- depending on the curve and the
steamer, of course. I presume the roller type gage has the advantage
that it can easily be made on a lathe (or screw machine) with no
pattern, no mold, no casting and no subsequent machining
