Hi Bill --

Yes, there is some truth to the magnets getting weaker from disassembly, but
they probably need remagnetizing anyway... It used to be that any good slot
car shop could remagnetize a motor, but now I don't know where I would go. Any
chance that a modern motor can be retrofitted?

Have fun!

How do you install thrust washers in an old open frame motor?

I have several Rex engines with DC-71 motors with various amounts of
play in the armatures. The motors are held together with screws, so
they should be easily disassembled. However, I've always heard the
permanent magnet can be weakened unless precautions are taken. Is
  there any truth to that?
