However, there's no need to worry about rust with Stainless Steel.

Not trying to create another "coupler incident"... tried real hard to stay out
of the "track Gage" discussion.. .now for drivers..I am of the opinion that if
you are after tractive effort applied to rails, steel (cold rolled-leaded) is
just about the best, the only drawback would be potential for rust in damp
environments where engine is stored without a protective, very light, coating
of a fine machine oil on locomotive tires/wheels. The best traction would be
steel on steel. Stainless is fine also, just a bit harder to machine.
I prefer cold rolled steel to stainless, visually, as it has a more realistic
gray appearance and not the bright silver appearance of stainless. The most
important, however is the free machining qualities and the lower cost. I am
currently involved in a project turning some tires for large dia. S drivers and
am using a piece of used well pipe. It has just the right ID and OD for turning
some very nice tires, and do not have to carve out center...just love recycling
"old" materials.
When I get done I will probably post info and pictures.
By the way Ed what were the largest driver diameters used on NYC Pacifics,
Hudsons and Atlantics?
