Hi Steve;

Wow, a concrete response, don't see those every day on the list...

The "History of S" DVD sounds like a winner and something any other DVD would
want to avoid competing with, at least to start.

One thing we have to think about is the purpose of the DVD. If it is for our
own entertainment, then all S content would be best. As Ed noted in an earlier
post; if we want to use this to help promote the scale, then "The Best of S
Scale" or "All S, All the Time" as a series title will probably NOT work. From
that point of view, something like "Top Notch Layouts of ...", with a sample
from each major scale in the locality would have a draw to folks in other
scales as well and get them to SEE some S in action. Sure, they may skip the S
chapter, but not if it is made to look appealing enough in the intro, cover
art, etc. The builders could asked about how and why they choose their current
scale, sources of product, etc. Even if someone sees it and decides on another
scale, it would be an informed decision knowing that S exists.

Another possibility would be functional focus, somewhat like Paul Scoles'
scenery DVD which just happens to use his Sn3 layout. A DVD (or series) on how
to operate a model railroad would be a bit different, draw people from multiple
scales and, if it just happened that some of the layouts used to illustrate it
were S scale...

Maybe NASG and/or NMRA through the S Scale SIG could help finance and
distribute the disc. As some folks like to say, just a thought.

Ed, Brian, et al:
If folks would like to discuss how to move this into as more serious stage
regarding logistics, costs, replication, etc., please contact me. Yes, I own a
corporate video production company based in the Twin Cities with some worldwide
clients. Two years ago, Ken Zieska of the Pines and Prairies Workshop and I
began work on a "History of S/50 Years of NASG" DVD which will premier
at the NASG Convention in Duluth in 2010. As part of that videotaping, we have
visited layouts of Frank Titman, Ed Loizeax, Bill Fraley, Dave Jasper and
others, as well as conducted interviews with all living NASG presidents save
one. I have also provided some production consultation on the Buffalo Creek and
Gauley DVD of Brooks Stover.

After 35 years in the business, I pretty well understand what it takes to make
interesting programs and the costs involved - and they are not inexpensive. Alan
Keller, I suspect, has pretty well streamlined his field production and editing
into a formulaic process, but depends on large sales volumes to offset costs. I
also suspect he's not getting rich on the efforts either. Not sure we could
sustain that in just the "S" world unless we charged a fair amount of
money per disc ($100+???), and to appeal to the larger modeling world we might
need other scales represented on the DVD.

The question is - and I don't want to necessarily start a poll here - is
there sufficient interest in our world to have 3 or 4 of our most famous layouts
on each DVD in Scale, Flyer and Hi-Rail to sustain the effort in a profitable
manner?

We'd all be interested in knowing. I'm off on a 10-day video shoot in
China tomorrow because Baby needs another new brass engine and I've got to
chase the buck wherever it leads me. Ken Zieska can field all the emails in my
absence. As a former Army Artillery officer, he's really good at firing
pinpoint rounds, then ducking and covering!
