Barry, You are correct when you talk about the AF collectors--I
venture to say most of the new stuff will never leave their boxes. But
the lack of sales doesn't end with that. With only a limited number of
"builder-modelers" in S scale who are really active those numbers become
much smaller. In my case your grocery store would be near perfect
however its physically a couple of inchs too deep. That beautiful
freight house is again too large to fit into my mature layout. It would
be interesting to find out how many layouts are in the stage of needing
building kits. How many are just doing benchwork, and how many are
essentially complete not to mention those not even on paper!

BTW, Jeff Madden requested the photo I took of your display, so it might
end up in the next Dispatch.

Its a real interesting fact that when I shot some of the catalog work
for SHS and AM that I would get emails quite frequently asking questions
about 'who makes that?',' is that still made?' 'how hard was it to make
that?' regarding some of the 'backup' stuff in the shot. So being in
the business a longer length of time I'm sure would prove useful also.
This is true in all kinds of retail sales. A good friend did a bedroom
setup shoot for a department store--the shot was desisgned to sell
sheets, pillow cases etc. The store got dozens of calls from people
trying to find the antique night stand next to the bed!!

Since the only magazine I shoot for now is an HO gauge one, I borrow a
layout and I've had two inquiries--what's that building in the
background. Heck I might have to switch scales also.

Good luck
