I think you miss his point. If Barry can't sell 250 building kits to the 
several thousand S Gaugers; and I use the term deliberately since a building 
can be used by scale, hi-rail or even AF folks; it's certainly NOT because the 
rest are all busily scratch building all their structures. More likely sticking 
with Plasticville or modified HO because it is simpler and quicker and 
"cheaper". The extension of your logic is that we don't need any manufactures, 
because we can scratchbuild EVERYTHING if we really want. Why then is there a 
regular cry "why can't someone make.... like they have in HO?"

    Why is a freight car less a model than a building? Personally I
don't see kit building as more modeling than going out and looking at
a real building and coming home and making it from raw materials is.
Why bother buying a limited run kit when there's a whole landscape of
prototypes to copy?
