estate (out of Chicago?) and got his start from that. Those were
high school days for me and oh what fun it was to mail-order stuff
all the way from the Iowa corn fields and the shadow of the Maytag
water tower. Several years later it was Walter Graeff and his Ace
company.

LeRoy Vavrinek ran his S Scale business out the basement of his home
on Walnut St. here in Des Plaines. His railroad ran around the walls
with inventory shelves above and below. His roadbed was roofing
shingles. We lived one block over on Henry Ave. Leroys kids kept his
personal stuff after their mom passed and it ended up with one of the
grandkids in Michigan. About ten years ago, it all returned here and
I parted it out. It included several iterations of Enhorning F
units. I still have an unsold box of LeRoys junk somewhere.

The southside of Des Plaines was a hotbed of model railroading in the
late 50's and early sixties. There four layouts in a three block
area. LeRoy didn't open his layout up, but was more than happy to run
a train if he thought he was going to sell something.
