Bob,

Bill is correct when he suspects the boiler diameter dimensions he gave you
do not include the jacket. The smoke box is 87-1/4" dia. which means the
jacket takes up the difference between the smoke box and the first course
boiler dia. of 86". Also, when reviewing the diagram for the Western
Pacific 4-8-4s (same locomotive as the SP GS-6), it shows the outline of the
jacket outside the boiler for the dimensions given. From the diagrams, it
appears the boilers were the same for the GS-1 thru GS-6 locomotives. Since
the GS-6 was based on the GS-2, those boilers are the same, just as the
Central of Georgia Class K 4-8-4s boiler and running gear were based on the
SP GS-2.

Hi Bob --

The two books I have that show dimensions indicate the first course behind
the smokebox is 86" and the course around the combustion chamber is 96".
It is not specified if that is over the jacketing, but I suspect not. It
also appears that all the later GS's (3-6) had the same basic boiler.

Hope this helps.

Have fun!

At present I am working on a project that involes the above engine
design.
Does anyone on this list know the diameter of the SP G-6 Boiler?
