Hi All, I replied to Jim privately about the resistance soldering. I have 2) PBL 300w Hotip units. I can't say enough about them. In doing some repairs especially in O Scale you need the 300w of power. I could not do the things I do in modeling without them. I also now use the tweezers to install my decoders. I accidentally hit both poles on a speaker. It made a strange noise, but still works.
Someone motioned that American Beauty sells some of their units refurbished. PBL does NOT do this for sure. They NEVER break so there are never any to refurbish. I have at times completely abused the duty cycle with having the unit on 5 on the heat for minutes! I could not hold the probe anymore. You simply cannot kill them. Bill Peters told me 15 years ago when I was buying my first unit that in 25 years ONE unit came back for repairs. Buy once cry once, be happy after that!
