I use to use mayonnaise in a stainless steel container with the
edge touching the mayo and the other edge touching the container as it
sat on a bread board. I haven't done it in awhile though. Not since I
fell off the deep end and can no longer accomplish much modeling wise.
The process is a little slow, normally over night. I also have used
drain cleaner. I would buy "Red Devil" brand at the local hardware
store. It was cheap and very effective compared to the national brands
like, DrainO.
Ah, but alas, it happens to also be used to make "speed", an
illegal methamphetamine drug so the company took it off the market to
protect us. It was a great paint remover too!
I also keep an alcohol lamp lit when I do solder work on brass
models. My fuel of choice is "Colman Camp stove fuel", or methanol,
wood alcohol, white gas (not kerosene). It is also used to make
"speed" so I suspect it will go away soon.

learned that Radio Shack no longer stocks Etchant. For those
unfamiliar with Etchant, model builders have used it for quickly and
very effectively weathering corrugated aluminum sheet stock for roofs
and siding.
