Bill....Not to be disagreeable, but my experience with Clover House
years ago was quite different. Russ made the infamous "basic body"
for some full scale length streamliners back in the late '70s. This
consisted of roof, floor and two or three end/middle blocks. Russ
had a woodworking shop of some kind (never saw it) and some skills
since he cut TONS of ties and drove himself near-deaf in the
process. Anyway, if I remember correctly, our goal was roof stock to
match the curved roof contour of AF cars. Russ charged me $300 for a
special cutter made to the right shape. While I do not know how much
wood he scrapped, I do know he never complained about scrap. His
overall charge to me was about the same, or a bit less, than the
standard Northeastern prices of the day. I think I sold about 200
cars back then. At 1-1/2 feet per car, maybe 300 feet of finished
roof stock. Of course, prices these days are higher for everything.
Cheers...Ed L.

PS: For the nostalgic among us, the smoothside sides were stamped
from plastic coated card stock similar to that used for menus in
greasy spoon diners. The ends started life as AF parts which were
made into patterns (added rivets and other details) in Barney
Daehler's hobbyist machine shop. The pattern was then used by Rio
Grande Model's Eric Bracher to make rubber molds from which the white
metal parts were cast. Ah-h-h-h.....the good olde daze when things
were done mostly out of friendship if expenses were covered.
