So don't worry about it, just include the extra twenty beans

Tom:
While membership in your favorite .org is a mighty good thing, it
generally bars any casual interested party from taking a peek and see
if they are interested. Except for TCA and NMRA, virtually all other
toy train conventions and shows are open to all. Most of those guys
are dying to show their stuff off and create interest in "their"
favorite scale/gauge.
I do know the NASG has waived the membership fee for casual
exhibitors/vendors/manufacturers to get their participation. Why not
extend the courtesy to all. It might be an easier path to snagging
that "O"rdinary, "H"ow "O"rdinary, or "N"othing scaler if they could
atleast attend without joining up. You have a better chance of hooking
them if you get them in the door. If they never get in the door,
chances are pretty slim, that they will see what NASG may have to offer.
Although it may be a bit of comparing apples to oranges, the regional S
Fest always seems quantum larger than any NASG convention. I'm sure
there are exceptions, but I believe for S Fest and Spring Spree , all
pay the same registration to participate with no additional strings
attached.
In the future, I suspect, casual memberships in fringe interests will
go the way of the Dodo bird. World economic conditions will foster
that a bit. Folks will look at the $5.00 or $10.00 memberships and find
something better to do with it. I hear folks even go to the library
now to read their magazines.
My myopic view. You get what you pay for. Anyway, Groucho Marx had it
right.
