In addition to the aforementioned book another book that explains the NYC
and PRR merger is the "The Fallen Colossus." It out lines what and how the
PC was conceived and the problems not addressed in the merger. Now having
lived through multiple mergers with the UP, I often wonder why the lessons
from the past are so easily forgotten. UP's merger reminds me of the board
game "Monopoly" and they have been lucky so far.
