Take a look at the three S scale locomotives in kit form from the days
of yore, labeled "In the Beginning" in the "Files" section under "Bob
Nicholson" to be thankful of just how far we have come - and I still
have one more of them there dudes I still want to build - someday!

I think more creative energy today is directed towards layout
construction, and other pursuits, such as DCC, structures etc., that
we used to spend building locomotives and rolling stock in order to
have an operating layout.

Even so, we spend copious amounts of time modifying ready-to-run
rolling stock to reflect our individual tastes or those of the
railroads we wish to emulate.

Myself, I find the majority of my time spent in layout construction. I
had to "embargo" my car shops (work bench) in order to force myself in
that direction, but after thirty plus years, SHABBONA RR is finally
taking shape. However, I have a lot of kit building and detailing
waiting for my attention, even at that.
