S friends, I have made some progress in understand my digital video program (can you say slow learner!) and have uploaded another longer video shot last weekend. This time it's CNW freight trains on the GPNTRR. To see it just go to YouTube and search PhotoTraxx as I've misplaced the url. One take is a reefer block entering the yard while a steam powered stock train leaves the yard. The second scene is the diesel powered reefer train of mostly PFE cars. Notice Mr. Hawley--no billboard reefers. Doing these scenes can be a bit trying at times. In some cases I'm running the camera plus two trains with sound (probably only possible with DCC). I do use extra lighting but somehow the 'system' dilutes any lighting effects so I'm going to have to be a little more "Hollywood" in my lighting styles in future scenes. During one the 'takes' a car drove through the neighborhood playing a Mexican polka through some overpowered system--Cut! I'm also careful to turn off my heater/AC unit, the air cleaner, kick out the dog/cats, and listen for other mysterious sounds. It's also important to set up your route because nothing is worse than the circuit breaker clicking away when you go into a switch thrown in the wrong direction. Dirty track and wheels have also caused problems. When I lasted visited with Jess Bennett, I viewed some footage shot by Lee Johnson I believe. During the video, Jess kept wondering about a sound we were hearing--it took a few minutes, but we were hearing the firing of switch machines. So despite the fact that these microphones are of poor quality they will pick up stuff we normally don't think about.
