If you are willing to run those ugly things called "diesels" why not put speakers under the layout? If you only allow bass sounds in those speakers, they only have to be somewhere in the neighborhood of the locomotive to sound right, as long as you have the higher frequencies coming from the locomotive. If I could figure out how to synchronize two decoders I would do this for steam.
