Hi Jamie, I gathered from Andy's e-mail to the group that you had a good time biking around Duluth.
After our last e-mail exchange, I decided to try out riding in a group. Every Saturday here near where I live a group bike riders get together to ride anywhere from 25 to 65 miles. As I told you, I had never ridden in a group before, even though I have been riding a bike since I was a young lad in Holland. Since at the time I was averaging around 15mph for a trip, I decided to ride with the group that was supposed to ride between 14 and 16mph. There were over a hundred riders there that day. One of the guys I talked to said that it was a low turnout because of annual race that was to take place the next day. The group I was in started off with about 20 riders, but before long I noticed there must have been over 40 in the group. Also, the group started off riding about 14.5mph, but in about 7 miles we were doing well over 16mph. This was still a bit of a challenge for me. After about 10 miles I just couldn't keep up and decided to take my own route back to the park from where we started. That was only about my 8th ride of the year, because of bad weather and major yard projects in the first half of the year. Since that time I have been able to steadily improve my trip average. Last Thursday it was 15.9. I plan to continue to ride twice a week (weather permitting, because we are getting a lot of heavy rain this summer) to get my averages well into the 16+ mph. I used to have trip averages of 16.4mph. Once I can steadily do that, I plan to try to ride one or two Saturdays a month with the club, to gain more experience in riding in a group. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you were an inspiration to me. - Peter.
