Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to join with Ken Zieska in extending many
thanks to all those that participated in the Duluth event trips and MSP layout
events. Words cannot describe what you guys and ladies presented to us. Hats
off to Jan Jopke, the event planner along with Walt for pulling this off. I
know I am leaving many out.
I had a chance to see the lakers (you call them boats) that transit the Great
Lakes. The Canadian Steamship Line lakers come to Baltimore in the winter with
Gypsum rock. That is the only time I get to see them come East. The 1000
footers are lake locked. We will never see them East.
One kept secret that not many saw was that the laker Arthur Anderson came in
the Duluth /Superior harbor 6 pm, I think Friday night loaded to her marks. If
you recall, she was behind the Edmund Fitzgerald that deadly night of Nov 10
1975 in Lake Superior. We will give that credit to you Jan for me seeing that,
even though it was not on the order board.
Seeing the ore and coal docks was one of a few times where we could see
prototype transportation, delivery and unloading of heavy bulk cargo which is
not easy to model.
Once again thanks to all who particicated to make our convention enjoyable.
As Andy said, if you missed it, you did miss it. regards Jerry Smith Arnold
