Ed, is totally correct in that you can't do too much to assure good
operation. However, there is always a few things that will pop up when
you least expect it. Case in point where a truck will loose it's
mounting screw. It might run for hours without it but when it enters
the tunnel it might decide to give up. Another thing that puzzles me
is-- if a derailment occurs in the same place several times, it is often
possible to relieve the situation by reversing the car--the car is the
same and the track hasn't be altered!
Another frustrating situation occurred on our modules during a couple of
train shows--it wasn't the cars operation or the track but one member
purchased an American Models bay window caboose. During operations we
noticed a intermittent problem running trains. This caboose was often
on a siding that occasionally was switched and thus 'live'. It so
happens that somebody had reversed an axle on one truck so a weak short
was occurring with the pickup wires on the truck. When the caboose was
in operation the poor contact of that wiper system again only caused a
intermittent short. It's hard to get things up and running during these
hectic setup sessions, so it would be nice (but improbable) if everybody
did as much testing as possible
