I purchased a set of Miller 4 wheel passenger trucks at the NASG
auction in Duluth. Yesterday I opened the package. The wheel sets were
out-of-gauge by my much newer NASG gauge. Easy to fix with a twist and
a drop of ACC. Now that the wheel sets are wider, I may need new
bolsters. This is not an issue. I can build these from brass stock.
The trucks came in two bags: one of wheel sets and one of side frames,
springs, etc. No instructions. I poured the white metal parts into a
plastic tray and started trying to assemble them. Examining the parts I
discovered that the drop hangers have the roller bearing journals
attached. These drop onto the side frames and neatly mesh. A pair of
springs go between the drop hanger and the side frame. The side frame
has mounting tabs for the bolster.
My problem is 'how do these things stay together'? I dropped the drop
hanger onto the side frame and inserted the springs. Nice equalization
and operation with the springs. But the moment I picked this assembly
up, it falls apart. There isn't an interlock.
Also the side frame tabs for the bolsters are just flat slabs. How do
they supposed to attach to the bolsters? No screws were included for me
to drill-and-tap a hole to attach the bolster.
