All --

My first train set was a Lionel, for Christmas 1939; I was 11 months old. I
had
that set until my birthday in 1949, when I got an AF set with a Hudson,
searchlight car, side-dump coal car, MoPac stock car, and RDG caboose. I added
to it and built my first kit, an Ambroid ACL watermelon car, when I was 13. I
still have this car in active service on my layout. By the time I went off to
college I had converted most of my stuff first to hirail, then to scale. I had
never seriously considered another scale.

One of the things that kept me in S was Eastern Model Railroad Co. in Hasbrouck
Heights NJ. I always went there for model stuff between ages 12 and 20.
Before
I had a driver's license I would bicycle there (from Teaneck NJ). Eastern
always had anything I wanted -- Northeastern, Strafford, Midgauge, Sylvania,
Exacta, Nixon, PermaBilt, Super Scale, Atlas "S" flextrack, Truscale roadbed.
It never occurred to me that this hobby shop was not typical until I moved away.
