We have used many sources over the years to find information on
Reefer cars and their paint schemes. One of my first purchases was
"The Great Yellow Fleet" by John H. White jr. is a great first
source. Ron Sebastian recommended the CB&Q HS magazine "The
Burlington Bulletin issue 12". A very good history of the BREX with
many prototype drawings for their cars as well as FGEX and WFEX (all
jointly owned and serviced). My next source was a soft cover but
hefty book put out by the Santa Fe HS about Santa Fe Refrigerator
Dispatch. Then we purchased Tony Thompson's, history of the Pacific
Fruit Express. These books all had one thing in common, a very
limited audience thus a very expensive cover price. For us they were
all worth every penny. Lastly I would recommend a small but tall
booklet put out by Atlas "O". It covers the first 100 roadnames of
their PS 40' wooden reefer. There are lots of sepia prototype images
that they used for many of their roadnames. They also include color
side shots of each model reefer they produced. I know that they went
to great pains to try and match the colors and artwork for each
prototype scheme.
