Hi all;

I checked in the Trainshed Cyclopedia No. 12, Tank Cars 1922-43 and found the
following information.

In 1928 ACF published a table for their non-insulated tank cars showing tank
size to gallons as follows:

Gals Interior Diam Length excluding headers
6000      73 1/2 inch      27 ft
8000      83 inch          28 ft
10000     92 inch          28 ft.

Other builders clearly varied, as some short-fat and some long and thin tanks
are shown in the book, but this may be a basis for comparison.

The narrow gauge Colorado based cars seem to have been early 6000 gal tanks.

Here is PBL's entry on them

Here is an article about the conversion of tanks to narrow gauge use.

Some basic math indicates that an O scale 6000 gal tank is probably about right
for an S scale 8000 gal car, although the details are, naturally, a bit large.
