One of the major mistakes, I made on my layout and most guys do also, is 
to make it too neat.  My mainline in many places is too well manicured 
with the yards totally overdone.  On my second to last rail laying 
project, I got it right by just using Arizona's brown dirt with a fair 
amount of weed tufts between the ties with the code 70 rail--looks about 
right to me.  Our members, who operated the real thing, might want to 
add something here, but it would seem like a well ballasted yard would 
be very hard to walk on if the ballast extended beyond the tie ends.  I 
think a gray/brownish hard packed dirt would be correct in many cases.
