I have been told that having the right size ballast makes all the difference,
as I have S scale ballast on my layout real rock from Classic Trains in CA.

That was from the editor of CTT.

I have spent 1000s on my layout so I am not going to cheapen the look of my
track.

I would get some of the ballast you are looking at and some S scale ballast to
compare how it looks, before making a decision.

Do not let the cost of this be a determing factor. I see this allot in all
layouts. It is a one time cost and the ballast will last for ever.

What makes one happy with something might not work for someone else.

Just a opinion and thought, before making a final decision.

Ed et al --

I use Arizona Rock & Mineral ballast. It's made of real rock and comes in many
shades and grades. I don't let the "HO scale" designation bother me -- I use HO
mainline-grade ballast on my mainline, and cinders in my yards and on my spurs.

I bought 50 pounds, then had to order another 25 pounds to finish up.
