"It is going to be a "good enough" rendition for sure, by far not a brass
level model. It was only decaled on 1 side when I got it so I thought I
would strip it and give it a new paint job. I am well beyond just a paint
job now, but am just improving it a bit. Nonetheless, I will have the only
one of the only one.....
I have now done the old school carving off the cast on grab irons to add
wire grabs. I am never going to do THAT again! So I am a bona fide S Scaler
now. Been there done that....
I have 3-6 new never been painted A F 3 bay shells that I am now absolutely
sure I will never touch. I may have the Ace conversion bolsters as well
since I have had them that long. I am pretty sure these shells were
unofficially made and stuffed out the back door at Lionel at some point - so
the story I was told. Let me know if you have some interest in them. They
are not here right now. I have to look for them but they are absolutely new
and pristine.
Thank You,
Bill Lane"
Bill and others,
First of all Bill, congratulations. I'll bet that will be a very neat Hopper
when you have completed your project, you are such a great modeler. Please
post a picture of it for us.
Back in our Lehigh Valley S Gaugers early days when we held our monthly
meetings, we all brought our tool boxes and worked on models. One of the
major modifications to American Flyer conversions back then was filing off
the grab irons [and the like] to convert the cars over to scale. I can still
see Frank Titman and Barry Mertz working away on all those AF hoppers. I
believe this is something that our clubs no longer care or need to do thanks
to S Helper Service and all our other manufacturers who do such a swell job
for us. But then again, maybe we should get our laid aside projects and our
tool boxes out again and take them to our monthly meetings, it would give us
something constructive to do.
"S"ee Ya,
Bill ( Fraley)
