This week at SHS…

The shipment with the new reefers and rebuilt boxcar was picked up
last month. We still have a few Nickel Plate Road (all numbers) and
Southern Pacific boxcars. The Nickel Plate Road are available now
for shipping and more Southern Pacific boxcars will arrive on the next
container later this month. We were happy to make the Southern
Pacific rebuilts for the 2010 S West convention this past summer. I
am sorry that we were not able to deliver these cars in time for the
event. I think that was a first. Considering the problems we have
been having with our builder’s parent company, I am happy the club was
understanding. The SAL, GN boxcars as well as the Baby Ruth reefers
were announced as sold out. We still have a few Southern Pacific #2,
#3 and #4 available to be ordered. Both the NKP and SP can be ordered

  Letter from Kader Industries (updated)….

On June 14th, we received a letter from the parent company of Sanda
Kan, our builder in Hong Kong. The CEO, Ivan Ting, explained that
Sanda Kan was reorganizing and that they would not be accepting new
purchase orders, but all existing purchase orders would be filled. As
you can imagine, this was an unexpected shock to us. A few phone
calls later, we discovered that 59 other clients had also received
this letter and only 20 accounts were to be kept. More bad news
followed. Two weeks ago we learned that our new fishbelly hoppers
would not be completed until the end of December, this includes our
Christmas Car. We are now asking those who have Christmas Cars on
order to contact us and let us know if they want to continue waiting,
use their deposit for another item or have us refund their deposit.
We are still receiving shipments from Hong Kong of completed items.
Mike and I are now exploring other possibilities in finding a new
builder and will keep everyone posted on our progress. We may need to
adjust our business model in the near future as it is very possible we
will not see any new items other than the fishbelly hoppers until late
in 2011

  DCC Upgrades…

Bill Moitz has been busy this summer with DCC upgrades of our past
products. He can install QSI revolution U sound decoders in our
classic SW9 switchers. We add a 1.1” high base sell baffled speaker.
This fits perfectly and it is as loud as our F units with a clarity at
the low end of many “O” gauge models. We custom program each engine
with the EMD switcher prime mover. We are using the same QSI
revolution U decoders for our F units. The increased current rating
of 1.5 amps really helps with longer trains and grades. This is
especially true with our F7s with the extra draw of Mars and class
lights. Although installing DCC sound in our SW1s is possible, we are
unable to do this because of the time needed to fit the baffle for the
speaker. But, we are more than happy to help with information on how
we did our own SW1s.
