I finally have room for a decent sized layout in a new home we'll be moving
into in a few weeks and although the finished room isn't as wide as I'd like
(11'x 28') with an inward sloping roof at the 52" level on both sides, I think
it should work okay for "S" scale. So, I have what may seem like primary
quesions while I imagineer my new layout.
Although I won't be able to use more than 8' of the width for the first half of
the room due to ingress and egress I should be able to use the full 11' width
for the remainder as long as I don't mind a duck-under or lift bridge to get
inside what I assume will be an around the wall layout. I really like mainline
operations with some switching locations along the route, but, my primary goal
is long train mainline running.
My question is this. What is considered broad and conventional radius curves in
"S" scale? I've got Linn Westcotts layout design book and several others
including Paul Mallory and John Armstrong's books, but in the real world, at
what point will larger steam locos (4-8-4 and larger) and RRM 8500 Turbines
look stupid running curves that are too small. Is 42" and 45" radius curves too
small to operate these types of locomotives and should I resign myself to 4
axle diesels and 6 coupled steam?
Hoping some more experienced "S" scalers can give me some words of wisdom as
this will be my 1st real layout after 40+ years of mostly armchair modeling.
