Hi Peter; The battery/RC set featured in RMC back in the 1970s used an A-B-A set of F units (in HO). A reasonable hybrid system might use DC or DCC in the yards to power switchers, but battery units on the main. Of course, if the price of each unit is $400 you are close to the price of a full DCC setup for one engine set!
